TV’s motoring pundit Quentin Willson advised the nation on the Tonight programme that the best time to buy a new car is now.
He reasoned that with falling demand for new cars came lower prices and people were now far better off trading in their old expensive-to-run car for a newer, more fuel efficient, model. One participant in the show saved £1,700 on running costs per year by trading in his old Rover 600 for a new Fiat 500. Another was spending £6,000+ a year keeping a gas-guzzling Mitsubishi Shogan 4×4 on the road. |
| Willson also highlighted another problem for owners of larger prestige and 4×4 models in that the value of their cars had dropped considerably in the last twelve months. A couple were told that the value of their Mercedes had plummeted by £6,000!
